Two separate studies released this week rank Barrie as one of the best places in Ontario to invest.

Barrie was Number 1 in terms of civic engagement in the Credit Unions of Ontario's new Co-operative Communities Index, although our overall ranking was brought down by what the study determined was a shortage of libraries, community centres and parks. Mayor Jeff Lehman does not disagree with the study, indicating that the city has been considering the possibility of adding two additional library branches and two recreation centres.

The Fraser Institute study on development barriers found that Barrie was more welcoming than many other cities. Mayor Lehman cites the streamlining of the development process as the primary reason, however the city's rezoning process was seen in the study as a mild deterrent.

Moving forward, Barrie is striving to develop more mixed forms of development, providing Barrie residents with more affordable options such as townhomes and apartments.
