It's official! Barrie's oldest high school is for sale. And you have until April 15th to put in an offer.
The listing price of just under $5 million also includes the nearby former Prince of Wales school, which the board closed in 2011, but not Red Storey Field, which is owned by the City of Barrie. The combined properties are approximately 7.4 acres.
As required under the Education Act's disposition of surplus property, the land was first offered to specific agencies. Those include school boards, a local college/university, a municipality, a local upper-tier municipality, the Crown of Ontario or the Crown of Canada.
Although there had been interest in the property when it was listed through the Act, there was not a successful offer of purchase. The former Prince of Wales school, located at 50 Bradford St., has been around since the 1870s and although it is listed on the municipal heritage register, it can be demolished with 60 days notice.
While the City of Barrie has no interest in purchasing the land, they are certainly interested in what will become of it, hoping that the purchaser will create something that will benefit not only the downtown core but also the citizens of Barrie.
Barrie Central Collegiate will close June 30th of this year.
